Cornerback Stephen Nelson announced his retirement from football at age 31.


Last season, Nelson played for the Houston Texans and helped the team reach the playoffs. He was second on the team in interceptions (4) and pass breakups (12).


In the wild card game mentioned by dropping odds against the Cleveland Browns, Nelson intercepted a Joe Flacco pass in the third quarter and returned it to the end zone for a touchdown.


Nelson said he wants to spend more time with his family. His baby is due in June.


The Oregon State University graduate was selected in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent the first 4 years of his career. Nelson left the team before its championship-winning 2019 season.


Nelson went on to play two seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, a season for the Philadelphia Eagles, and two seasons for the Houston Texans.


In total, the cornerback has thrown 13 interceptions and broken up 78 passes in his career.
