Wolff explained Mercedes` failed strategy in Monaco.
On lap 51 of the Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes called Lewis Hamilton for a pit stop. A lap later, the same maneuver was performed at Red Bull with Max Verstappen: as a result, the Dutchman drove ahead of the W15.
It turned out that Hamilton had not been warned about the critical importance of the first lap after the pit stop - which Lewis was surprised by on the radio.
The first time we had a misunderstanding on the pit wall - we misunderstood each other. That circle was critical, we planned to make an undercut. But then the discussion began about whether any pace on the first lap would be enough on the new tyres. And so he [Hamilton] received a confusing message at best - probably wrong.
The lap after leaving the pit lane was critical. We were worried that if we destroyed the tires in one lap, what would happen next. But in the end, Lewis received the wrong message - it was the team`s fault.
We wanted to get close to Verstappen and then undercut, which we obviously couldn`t get across correctly.
The moment the accident happened [at the start of the race] it became clear that we were in a difficult situation. Overall, I don`t think much can be changed in Monaco. You finish where you start, " Wolff said.
